Peru’s football body chief hopeful of beating Uruguay, Venezuela

Lima, March 12 (IANS) Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) president Edwin Oviedo has said the upcoming matches against Venezuela and Uruguay will be significant and crucial, according to local media.

Both matches will be held this month and Oviedo said on Friday: "The matches are important for us but we have full confidence in our technical command. These are fundamental matches for us and we are sure we will have good results."

He added he is confident the team's work and Argentine coach Daniel Gareca's leadership will help to obtain positive results in the matches. Peru will face Venezuela on March 24 in Lima and Uruguay on March 29 in Montevideo, reports Xinhua.

"We are aware it will be a tough competition but we should come away with two good results, that is why we need the support of the Peruvian people who strongly need good news. I completely trust Gareca," he said.

Peru are currently in penultimate place in the South American Qualifying Tournament for Russia 2018, with only three points. Peru have only defeated Paraguay and have lost the other three games against Chile (3-4), Colombia (2-0) and Brazil (3-0).
