Srinagar, March 9 (IANS) A gunfight was raging on Wednesday between security forces and separatist guerrillas in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, police said.
"A gunfight has started in Awantipora (Pulwama) plant nursery area between troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police and the militants," a senior police officer said here.
"Initially the militants had been engaged in a gunfight by the security forces in Puchal (Kakapora) village of the same district, but managed to escape to the plant nursery in Awantipora where firing exchanges are now going on.
"Because the militants escaped from one place to the other, the security forces have laid a cordon around a larger area now to ensure that the militants are prevented from escaping," said the official.
Reports from the area said heavy firing exchanges were going on there.
Earlier on Wednesday, security forces recovered an AK-47 rifle after a brief gunfight with the guerrillas in Hadoora (Wanihama) village of Ganderbal district.
