New Delhi, March 8 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday issued notice to the Tamil Nadu government following the rescue of over 500 bonded labourers from a brick kiln in the state's Thiruvallur district.
According to the commission, the 550 bonded labourers, rescued on March 2, were found to have been brought from six districts of Odisha besides some from Chhattisgarh in early January this year and allegedly forced to work from 3 a.m. with meager weekly wages of Rs.400 for a family.
Taking suo motu cognizance of the entire issue through media reports, the NHRC has issued a notice to the state government and called for a factual report on the issue.
The commission has directed the state government to specify the steps taken for rehabilitation of the bonded labourers as well as details of the payment made to these labourers on their release.
