Amritsar, March 7 (IANS) Army chief General Dalbir Singh on Monday presented the coveted President's Standard to 18 Cavalry of the Indian Army at an impressive ceremony here.
General Dalbir Singh is also the Honorary Colonel of the regiment and his father Risaldar Major Ramphal Singh (retd) had served with distinction during the India-Pakistan Wars of 1965 and 1971 as part of this regiment.
The regiment was raised on January 31, 1842.
The 18 Cavalry is a frontline regiment of the Indian Armoured Corps which has participated in a large number of operations undertaken since its raising.
"In the course of discharging its onerous duties, both in operations and in peace, the hard work done and sacrifices made by the valiant soldiers of this Regiment have been duly recognised by the 29 battle and theatre honours received by the Regiment, second highest in the Armoured Corps," an official statement said.
A "Special Day Cover" was also released to mark the day.
