Attacked pregnant woman gives birth to 'healthy' baby

London, March 5 (IANS) A pregnant woman who was stabbed in a busy town centre in England was 'doing well' and gave birth to an 'alive and healthy' baby on Saturday, police said.

A man, 41, who is believed to be known to the woman, was arrested on Friday evening on the suspicion of attempted murder, Mirror.uk reported.

The woman was in a critical condition after the suspected 'domestic' incident in West Midlands, England.

The victim was heard screaming 'not the baby' just seconds after she was attacked near Sutton Coldfield Baptist Church Centre on Trinity Hill.

West Midlands Police confirmed her child was delivered safely in a hospital.

The police were informed by passersby around 3.15 p.m. (local time) after the woman was stabbed 'multiple times' with a knife, it said.

On Saturday, the police said the man in custody was held on suspicion of attempted murder.

He is believed to be known to the victim, and the police were treating the incident as a 'domestic-related situation', the police added.

Chief Inspector Julian Harper from West Midlands Police said: "This resulted in the female receiving critical stab wounds."

"They are, we believe, known to each other so this is a domestic-related situation as such. The public should not be alarmed as we have the only person believed to be responsible for this situation."

Two members of the public -- both men -- suffered minor hand injuries after intervening in the violence. They were receiving treatment in the hospital.

"I would certainly like to thank the individuals who got involved into a volatile situation with a complete disregard for their own safety," Harper added.

"I heard male voices shouting 'drop it, drop it' and a woman screaming something about 'not the baby' or 'not our baby'," an eyewitness said.
