Hanoi, March 4 (IANS) The Vietnamese Football Federation (VFF) has signed a deal with Nguyen Huu Thang to coach its national team.
Thang, born in 1971, replaces Japanese Toshiya Miura whose contract was terminated late January following Vietnam's poor performance at the 2016 AFC U23 Championship in Qatar, reports Xinhua.
For a two-year tenure, Thang will guide Vietnam in two qualifiers of the World Cup 2018, first against Chinese Taipei on March 24, then Iraq on March 29, it was announced here on Thursday.
The Vietnamese players will gather in Hanoi on March 14 to tune up for the qualifiers.
Thang who started working as head coach of a Vietnamese club since 2009, was assessed as one of the best players of the Vietnamese national team during the 1990s, the VFF said on its website.
