CPI leader slams Centre for JNU, court incidents

New Delhi, March 2 (IANS) CPI-M leader Mohammed Salim on Wednesday hit out at the central government in the Lok Sabha for curtailing freedom of speech and expression, citing the Patiala House court violence and action in Jawaharlal Nehru University.

"When this government came to power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about maximum governance, minimum government. But what happened in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was maximum government. And what happened in Patiala house court was minimum government," he said.

"Freedom of speech and expression was curtailed to the hilt. The laws and the rules were crushed by this government."

He, however, also had some words of praise for the government.

"Earlier, they had completely rejected the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). Finally, in the budget the BJP-led government has acknowledged its importance. Good sense has finally prevailed," he said.
