Beijing, Feb 29 (IANS) Ten trees believed to be over 100 years old were found on a demolition site in the Chinese capital Beijing, the media reported on Monday.
Spotted and reported by a person with keen interest in trees in Chaoyang district, the trees include an elm and a Chinese scholar tree besides jujube trees, experts with the Beijing Forestry University and Beijing Botanical Garden said.
It is rare to find such a group of old trees this close to the downtown area of the capital, Xinhua news agency reported.
Some of the tree branches had already been broken during the ongoing demolition.
The municipal bureau of landscape and forestry has begun to clear the construction waste from around the trees so that they can be further studied.
