Five killed as truck ploughs into shops in Bengal

Kolkata, Feb 28 (IANS) Five people were killed when a speeding truck ploughed into several shops in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, police said on Sunday.

Three others were critically injured in the accident that happened on the Basanti highway near Bhangar on Saturday night, said a police officer.

The police subsequently arrested the driver and seized the truck.

Locals blamed the police for the accident.

"Even though the area is accident-prone, police never bother to control traffic here. There is hardly any traffic police presence. Even when they are present, they don't control the traffic," said an eyewitness.
