Document exposes rift between Rousseff, party

Brasilia, Feb 27 (IANS) A document released by Brazil's ruling Worker's Party (PT) has exposed a rift between President Dilma Rousseff and the party, the media reported on Saturday.

The document which was issued on Friday exposed the rift in the PT, with a faction of the party believing that the government is abandoning some of its most traditional values to stay in power, Xinhua news agency reported.

In a resolution approved on Friday by its national office, the PT disproved the link between the fiscal adjustments planned by the federal administration and the loss of workers' rights.

The document said that fiscal reform projects would lead to a suspension of rights and undermine the reduction of inequalities, wealth distribution, job generation, and the priority status of social programmes.

Both Rousseff and her predecessor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, are affiliated to the PT, which is the only party in Brazil to be elected for four consecutive terms since 2003.

The PT took a stance against local media, which, it argued, are biased against the administration and favour the opposition.

Also, the party criticised the opposition party, the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB), which, it said, has been attempting to impeach the president and take over power.

It also blamed the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), the largest allied party in Rousseff's coalition, saying a significant share of PMDB's leadership is playing for the opposition.
