Kolkata, Feb 26 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday accused the opposition of trying to compete with her government out of jealousy and asked them to prove allegations of corruption against her.
"Let me tell the opposition... don't compete out of a sense of jealousy. Let the competition be based on the work done. We are ready to for comparison between 64 years (from 1947 to till 2011 when her government came to power) and last four years," she said here.
On the Opposition accusing her of being a "thief and corrupt", the Trinamool Congress supremo said: "You have to prove it."
"The previous regime harped on bringing industry by showcasing Singur but it did nothing. Instead whatever it did, the entire industry was destroyed. People will not support those who do not do anything, Adon't allow others to work and instead play the blame game," Banerjee said.
She also reiterated her stand against the central government's funding system.
"People say we incurred a debt of Rs.1 lakh crore in five years. But out of that Rs.94,000 crore was used for repaying loans taken by Left Front. Centre has stopped funds for several schemes. We were able to achieve democratic freedom in 2011 but not economic freedom. Centre has taken away Rs.1 lakh crore
"I doubt if anyone else could have performed so much in the last five years in the conditions we had to work in. This calls for research and one needs to study this," she added.
