Kanhaiya sent to two weeks judicial custody

New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS) A court here on Friday sent JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, arrested on charges of sedition, to two weeks judicial custody, sources said.

According to sources, Delhi Police told the metropolitan magistrate that it did not require further custody of Kanhaiya Kumar, and the court then remanded the student leader to two weeks judicial custody.

Police on Thursday sought custody of Kanhaiya Kumar on the ground that he has to be confronted with other two accused JNU students - Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya.

Khalid and Bhattacharya, facing sedition charges for allegedly raising "anti-India" slogans are in police custody till February 27.

The two Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students surrendered before police on Tuesday outside a gate of the university after a case against them was registered at Vasant Kunj police station.

Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on February 12 after the event held on the university campus in commemoration of the death of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru who was executed in 2013. He allegedly shouted anti-India slogans at the event.
