Japan to restart fourth nuclear reactor

Tokyo, Feb 26 (IANS) Japan on Friday will restart its fourth nuclear reactor - unit 4 of the Takahama Nuclear Plant in Fukui Prefecture - after it was shut for leaking contaminated water.

It would be Kansai Electric Power Company’s (KEPCO) second restart since the company was placed under strict inspection guidelines in July 2011, Channel News Asia reported.

Japan’s nuclear watchdog had imposed stringent regulations following the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown after a magnitude-9 earthquake which triggered massive tsunamis and caused destruction in the region.

Last week, trouble surfaced when KEPCO said it found contaminated water leaking from unit 4 of the Takahama plant. The company said the problem has been solved.

On Wednesday, the nuclear watchdog gave the green light to two more units at Takahama. Some experts have said the reactors should have been closed, as they are 40 years old.

The government is looking to have nuclear power comprise about 20 percent of the country's energy mix.
