Egyptian president starts Asian tour

Astana (Kazakhstan), Feb 26 (IANS) Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi arrived in Kazakhstan on Friday, the first leg of an Asian tour that includes Japan and South Korea.

Al-Sisi is set to meet Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to discuss trade and economic cooperation, the fight against terrorism and religious extremism and other topics on the international agenda, EFE news reported.

Kazakh Culture and Sports Minister Arystanbek Mukhamediuly and Deputy Foreign Minister Askar Mussinov greeted the Egyptian leader at the Astana International Airport.

The Egyptian president's visit comes two days after Kazakhstan announced that it would resume direct passenger flights to Egypt from March.

Kazakhstan suspended flights to Egypt following the crash of a Russian A321 plane that killed all 224 people on board on October 31, 2015.

Kazakhstan-based SCAT company will operate direct flights from Almaty to Sharm el-Sheikh starting from March 2016.

The announcement to resume flights came on the same day that Al-Sisi acknowledged that the plane had been downed by terrorists.
