Lord Buddha's day marked in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, Feb 22 (IANS) Cambodia marked on Monday the Meak Bochea's Day, the day Lord Buddha announced his passing away.

Held at the foot of Preah Reach Trap Mountain in Kandal province, the religious event was presided over by Great Supreme Patriarch Tep Vong, chief of the Mohanikaya Buddhist sect, and Supreme Patriarch Bour Kry, leader of the Dhammayut Buddhist sect, with the participation of thousands of Buddhists, Xinhua reported.

The annual ceremony was to commemorate the day when Lord Buddha declared his passing away, which would happen three months later, and to mark the ordainment of Buddha's first 1,250 disciples who spontaneously came to see him and listen to his sermon on that day.

"The Meak Bochea's Day is an important religious event for Cambodia, where Buddhism is the state religion and more than 95 percent of the population is Buddhists," Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Monday.

On the day, people pray to Lord Buddha and give alms to monks.
