New Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS) Alok Kumar Verma, who was Thursday named as the next Delhi Police chief to succeed B.S. Bassi, is not an "outsider" to the force and has held many crucial positions in it.
Currently posted as director general of Tihar jail, Verma, a 1979 batch IPS officer of the union territories cadre, will assume office on February 29 and would have a tenure of 17 months.
Verma has headed the South and Northeast districts as a deputy commissioner, the important New Delhi range as the joint commissioner and also the crime branch as joint CP and later as special commissioner.
He was posted as director general of police in Mizoram but came back to Delhi - reportedly on Bassi's special request to the home ministry - after just 13 months to become special commissioner, administration - the number two position in the Delhi Police hierarchy.
Considered an upright officer, Verma was briefly in trouble after BBC made a documentary on the convicts of the December 16 gang rape case. He was asked for an explanation by the home ministry for allowing the interview.
