Kolkata, Feb 10 (IANS) India's maiden integrated and dedicated climate cell in a civic body is proposed to be set up at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation with a dedicated web portal and mobile app intended to give out information to citizens on eco-friendly measures and disaster alerts, it was announced here on Wednesday.
"The mobile app is the first-of-its-kind in the country and is intended to give out information to citizens on various eco-friendly measures and alerts during disasters as part of preparedness planning. This initiative is expected to help citizens take steps at individual and collective level to make a difference to the city," said a release issued by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The chamber, along with the British Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, organised a programme on Climate Smart City during the day.
The app consists of a rooftop solar feasibility calculator.
The Climate Change Cell initiative is expected to help citizens take steps at the individual and collective level.
The cell's setup has been supported by the British government under a two-year UK-Kolkata Municipal Corporation Programme of one million pound technical assistance on low carbon and climate resilient Kolkata signed during British Prime Minister David Cameron's visit to Kolkata in November 2013.
