MIM Withstands TRS Wave in Hyderabad Civic Polls

MIM Withstands TRS Wave in Hyderabad Civic PollsHyderabad, Feb 5 (IANS) While a TRS wave swept Hyderabad civic polls, MIM withstood it in its traditional strongholds.

Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) bagged 44 seats in 150-member Greater Hyderabad Municipal Elections (GHMC), one seat higher than its tally in 2009 elections.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which bagged 99 seats, swept central Hyderabad, twin city of Secunderabad, information technology district Cyberabad and the outskirts.

MIM, which emerged second largest party, maintained its vice-like grip in the old city while capturing some divisions outside its traditional stronghold.

"This party has record & history of winning even during a wave," tweeted MIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi. He pointed out that MIM withstood waves of Indira Gandhi, N. T. Rama Rao, Narendra Modi and now TRS.

Owaisi said out of 44 corporators of MIM, four are Hindus - three belonging to other backward castes and one from the scheduled caste.

In Puranapul division, MIM's candidate Raj Mohan defeated Mohammed Ghouse of Congress. Owaisi termed it as a victory of secularism.

"Out of 44 corporators, 18 are women. More power to women," Owaisi tweeted.

The MIM leader thanked people for their support to the party. He also thanked MIM workers saying they worked as a team.

He congratulated TRS, especially party leader and state minister K. Tarakarama Rao, for party's "fantastic" performance.

"My commiserations to Congress, TDP and other parties," he remarked.

Congress could win only two seats while TDP-BJP alliance finished with a tally of five.
