Islamabad, Jan 30 (IANS) The attack on Bacha Khan University in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was a result of a security lapse, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has said.

According to the JIT's report the police did not reach the university on time after being called, The Nation reported.

The report said the removal of BKU's vice chancellor has been asked for.

"The security in-charge of the university was also absent on the day," the report said.

The report will be presented to the authorities and the province's governor for further action.

The Bacha Khan University was attacked by TTP affiliated militants on January 20 in which 21 people were killed, mostly students and staff members. The attack was conducted by four militants in the early hours of the day.

It was the second major attack on an educational institution in Pakistan after Peshawar's Army Public School on December 16, 2014.

After the attack security has been beefed up in educational institutes of the country. All schools were closed in Punjab province of Pakistan till February 1.
