Union Minister Babul Supriyo Defies Prohibitory Orders to Meet Dead Girl's Family

Asansol, Jan 27 (IANS) Union minister Babul Supriyo on Wednesday defied prohibitory orders to visit the house of a deceased minor girl in West Bengal's Burdwan district.

Supriyo, the Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha member from Asansol, alleged that he was prevented by police from entering Jamuria, about 200 km by road from Kolkata, when he was on his way to meet the family members of the victim.

"WB police, which is no less than TMC (state's ruling Trinamool Congress) Party cadre hs (has) nw (now) stooped 2 the level of stopping a local MP & a central minister frm (from) meeting his people," tweeted Supriyo, a singer-turned-politician.

The union minister of state for urban development accused Asansol Durgapur Police Commissioner S.N. Gupta of having told him that his visit could breach communal amity.

"How can the police commissioner 'predict' that there wil (will) be COMMUNAL tension? Where dies communal come from here," Supriyo added.

Supriyo said he had tried to ride a motorcycle to enter the area, but with police refusing permission, he was finally forced to walk.

He later led a march in the area.

A senior police officer said the law would run its course with regard to the minister violating prohibitory orders.

He said two people have been arrested and murder charges slapped on them with regard to the girl's death.

However, the BJP has alleged that it was a case of gang rape and murder.
