US to Push for Expanded Admittance Of Refugees, Says Kerry

Davos, Jan 22 (IANS) US Secretary of State John F. Kerry disclosed on Friday that the US would push for admittance of more refugees.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) here, Kerry said US President Barack Obama would host a summit at the UN this fall on refugees, during which the US would make efforts to rally the world community on several fronts, Xinhua reported.

It aims to increase the number of countries admitting refugees by 10 and the response to humanitarian funding appeals by 30 percent. It will also call for countries accepting refugees to double the number they resettle.

Earlier this week, German President Joachim Gauck at a speech at the WEF argued that the responsibility of the European countries to help refugees is humanitarian.

But putting a cap on the number of refugees entering Europe would not be unethical, he said.

Last year, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad blamed European countries for the crisis of the Syrian refugees. According to al-Assad, Europe was not dealing with the cause of the refugee crisis.
