Kolkata, Jan 17 (IANS) Three days after he mowed down an India Air Force officer with his speeding vehicle, Sambia Sohrab was arrested by the city police late Saturday.
Breaking police barricades, Sambia in his over-speeding SUV knocked down 21-year-old Corporal Abhimanyu Gaud, who was supervising Republic Day parade rehearsals at the Indira Gandhi Sarani on January 13.
He had been on the run since then and the police had issued a look-out notice against him, his brother Ambia and their father former RJD legislator Mohammad Sohrab.
"Sambia was arrested in the night from the city. He is being interrogated," a senior police officer said.
While police had initially suspected Sohrab's elder son Ambia Sohrab as the one involved in the accident, Special Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Debasish Boral on Saturday evening said it was Sambia who was driving the car.
Opposition parties had accused the Mamata Banerjee government of thwarting the investigation to shield the leader said to have joined the Trinamool earlier.
BJP leader Roopa Ganguly too hit out at the Trinamool for shielding the guilty.
