Farmers’ Suicide: Punjab to Give Compensation on Same Day

Chandigarh, Jan 15 (IANS) The Punjab government announced on Friday that it will provide compensation on the same day to families of farmers who commit suicide.

"In a bid to mitigate the unbearable pain and to share the grief of the families of the farmers who commit suicide, the Punjab government has decided to make the compensation to the farmers' families on the same day," said a state government spokesman.

Chief Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal has issued written instructions to deputy commissioners on the directions of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in this regard, he added.

"As per the instructions, in case of any unfortunate incident of farmer's suicide, the deputy commissioner concerned would immediately determine the eligibility of family members to whom disbursement of compensation could be made. Thereafter, the disbursement of compensation would be ensured on the same day," the order said.

The deputy commissioner would take ex-facto approval from competent authority for the same later on, it added.

Suicides by farmers have increased in 'Green Revolution' state Punjab in recent years as farmers have been suffering crop damage and some of them were under heavy debt.

Punjab, with just 1.54 percent of the country's geographical area, contributes nearly 50 percent of food grains (wheat and paddy) to the national kitty.
