UP Governor Moots Five-Year Term for Vice-Chancellors

Lucknow, Jan 9 (IANS) In a decision that could infuse stability in the higher education sector, Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik on Saturday announced the tenure of all the vice-chancellors of universities in the state would be of five years, as against the present three years.

Making the announcement after a meeting with all 25 VCs of the state's varsities he had convened at the Poorvanchal University in Jaunpur, he told the media that a proposal for this measure was ready and had been sent to the state government for necessary action.

 

Naik, who is ex-officio chancellor of all state universities, also said that it has been seen that there was a gross misuse of degrees and hence there was a need of "special coding", which would be initiated soon.

He also expressed happiness that academic sessions were now on track and exams were being held on time. The governor also said that till now student union elections were being held only in four varsities and it was his endeavour to see them in all.
