15,000 Indoreans Set World Record by Cycling Together

Indore, Dec 27 (PTI) As many as 15,000 locals today set a world record of cycling under the first edition of 'Indore Cyclothon', a feat earlier achieved by South Africans.

The event organised by Indore Cycling Association (ICA) has been acknowledged by Golden Book of World Record (GBWR).

"We have cleared the claim of ICA and subsequently issued them certificate. The event has been acknowledged as highest number of people riding cycle together under one programme in the world," GBWR India chief Manish Vishnoi told PTI.

Earlier, Vishnoi said South Africans held the record where 8,500 people rode bicycles at an event in Cape Town in 2012.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Union Minister for Environment Prakash Javadekar and BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya attended the programme.

Vijayvargiya, who is also chairman of Cycling Federation of India and president of ICA, said that he was in talks with the district administration to make several routes as 'car free' for one day in a week and allow only cycles to ply.

He said today's event aimed at bringing awareness about environment and health issues and a large number of people, including children and senior citizens took part in it.
