‘Carol’ Leads 73rd Golden Globe Awards’ Nomination Pack

Los Angeles, Dec 10 (IANS) "Carol", a Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara-starrer film, on Thursday bagged a maximum of five nominations for the 73rd Golden Globe Awards. Interestingly, the two leading ladies are competing against each other for the Best Actress trophy. The TV category has as many as six shows in a tie with three nominations each.

Among the movies, "Carol", about a relationship between two women of different age groups, also finds a mention in the Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director - Motion Picture (Todd Haynes) and Best Original Score - Motion Picture (Carter Burwell) categories.

Following close on the heels of "Carol" in the nomination list are "The Big Short", "The Revenant" and "Steve Jobs"; while the movies with three nominations each include "The Danish Girl", "The Hateful Eight", "The Martian", "Room 3" and "Spotlight 3".

The Best Motion Picture - Drama category has "Mad Max: Fury Road", "The Revenant " and "Spotlight" in competition with "Carol", whereas the Best Director - Motion Picture trophy contenders include Alejandro G Inarritu (“The Revenant”), Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”), Ridley Scott (“The Martian”) and George Miller (“Mad Max: Fury Road”) apart from Haynes.

For the Best Performance By An Actor In A Motion Picture - Drama category, Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Revenant"), Bryan Cranston ("Trumbo"), Michael Fassbender ("Steve Jobs"), Eddie Redmayne ("The Danish Girl") and Will Smith ("Concussion") are vying with each other, and among the actresses in the same category, there are Brie Larson ("Room"), Saoirse Ronan ("Brooklyn") and Alicia Vikander ("The Danish Girl") who are pitted against Mara and Blanchett.

The contenders in the Best Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy category include “The Big Short”, “Joy”, “The Martian”, “Spy” and “Trainwreck”.

Those competing in the Best Performance By An Actress In a Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy category are Jennifer Lawrence (“Joy”), Melissa McCarthy (“Spy”), Amy Schumer (“Trainwreck”), Maggie Smith (“The Lady in the Van”) and Lily Tomlin (“Grandma”).

The Best Performance By An Actor In a Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy category comprises names like Christian Bale (“The Big Short”), Steve Carell (“The Big Short”), Matt Damon (“The Martian”), Al Pacino (“Danny Collins”) and Mark Ruffalo ("Infinitely Polar Bear").

The nominations in the Best Animated Film category include "The Good Dinosaur", "Inside Out", "The Peanuts Movie", “Anomalisa” and "Shaun the Sheep"; while the Best Motion Picture - Foreign Language category will see "The Brand New Testament (Belgium, France, Luxembourg), "The Club" (Chile), "The Fencer" (Finland/ Germany/ Estonia), "Mustang" (France) and "Son Of Saul" (Hungary) vying for the trophy.

In the song sub-head, the Best Original Song - Motion Picture nomination line-up includes “Love me like you do” (“Fifty Shades Of Grey”), “One kind of love” (”Love & Mercy”), “See you again” (“Furious 7”), “Simple song #3” (“Youth”) and “Writings on the wall” (“Spectre”). And for the Best Original Score - Motion Picture trophy, “Carol” is in the race with “The Danish Girl”, “The Hateful Eight”, “Steve Jobs” and “The Revenant”.

For the Best Screenplay - Motion Picture award, Emma Donoghue ("Room"), Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer ("Spotlight"), Charles Randolph and Adam Mckay ("The Big Short"), Aaron Sorkin ("Steve Jobs") and Quentin Tarantino ("The Hateful Eight") are in a face-off.

From the world of television, six shows -- "American Crime", "Fargo", "Mr. Robot", "Outlander", "Transparent" and "Wolf Hall" -- have scored three nominations each.

The Best Television Series - Musical or Drama category has "Casual Hulu" , "Mozart In The Jungle", "Orange Is The New Black", "Silicon Valley", "Transparent" and "Veep" in neck-to-neck competition, while the Best Television Series - Drama will see shows like "Empire", "Game of Thrones", "Mr. Robot", "Narcos" and "Outlander" battling it out.

Under the category of Best Performance by an Actor in Musical TV Series, the nominations are Aziz Ansari ("Master of None"), Gael Garcia Bernal ("Mozart In the Jungle") , Rob Lowe ("The Grinder"), Patrick Stewart ("Blunt Talk") and Jefrey Tambor ("Transparent"); and actresses contending in the same category include Rachel Bloom ("Crazy Ex-Girlfriend"), Jamee Lee Curtis ("Scream Queens"), Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Veep"), Gina Rodriguez ("Jane The Virgin"), Lily Tomlin ("Grace and Frankie").

In contention for an award in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture made for Television category are Kirsten Dunst ("Fargo"), Lady Gada ("American Horror Story: Hotel"), Sarah Hay ("Flesh and Bone"), Felicity Huffman ("American Crime"), and Queen Latifah ("Bessie").
