Hyderabad, Nov 30 (IANS) A centre of excellence for smart manufacturing in aerospace and defence is proposed to be set up in Telangana, NITI Aayog member V.K. Saraswat said on Monday.
He said a detailed project report (DPR) was being done for the creation of the research and development facility for manufacturing of future aerospace systems.
He told the second Defence & Aerosupply Conference that he was trying to push for the project, which will develop new processes for different applications.
The former Defence Research and Development Organisation chief and scientific advisor to the defence minister said the centre would bring together software engineers, machine and raw material designers for indigenous manufacture of special equipment for various segments of the industry.
He said smart manufacturing was required for India to tap the huge potential in aerospace and become self-reliant in defence.
Telangana's Industries Secretary Arvind Kumar told IANS that if the central government approves the project, the state government would provide land and other support.
Saraswat said one machine tool centre was also planned in Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai.
